News Summary

  • Viettel is the first telco in Southeast Asia to deploy Cisco 8000 Series routers powered by Cisco Silicon One, one of the industry’s most powerful networking chips that reduces energy consumption while increasing bandwidth
  • The new network architecture has helped Viettel support the growing volume of traffic on its network while lowering its total cost of ownership (TCO) by 70%.
  • Using Cisco Crosswork Network Services Orchestrator (NSO), Viettel has been able to automate its services in the backend, reducing its service provisioning time from days to minutes.

VIETNAM, 26 February 2024 — Viettel, Vietnam’s leading digital telecommunications company and Cisco, a worldwide leader in technology, have expanded their partnership to co-create a next-generation network infrastructure to drive emerging technology and innovation in Vietnam. Building on a decade-long partnership with Cisco, Viettel has implemented the Cisco 8000 router series and the Cisco Crosswork Network Services Orchestrator (NSO) to deliver fast and reliable connectivity to businesses in Vietnam as they accelerate their digital transformation journeys and leverage the potential of emerging technologies.

Over the past few years, Viettel has experienced immense traffic growth on its network from increased demand for mobile, fixed line, and television services. As the digital backbone of Vietnam, and the largest mobile telecommunications service provider, Viettel has had to transform its network infrastructure to provide next-generation connectivity to Vietnam’s increasingly digital society. Cisco has worked closely with Viettel on its network transformation with Cisco 8000 Series Router Systems powered by Cisco Silicon One.

Boosting Network Efficiency and Speed

The new network architecture has helped Viettel to increase its network performance to support the growing volume of traffic and deliver connectivity with minimal delays. Viettel’s network transformation has allowed it to take its networks from 100G to 400G and 800G capacities that are crucial in enabling complex, high-bandwidth applications. This marks a major milestone, especially as businesses in Vietnam explore use cases with emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, 5G, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

According to Viettel, moving to the Cisco 8000 series routers has helped Viettel achieve a 70% reduction in its TCO. The Cisco Crosswork NSO has enhanced Viettel’s visibility of the network, enabling it to swiftly identify and resolve service issues. Viettel is now able to automate processes for customers in multi-vendor environments, accelerating its delivery of services like Enterprise VPN networks, Mobile and Fixed Services from days to a matter of minutes, enabling faster recovery of failed services from faulty code.

“Deploying the Cisco 8000 Series routers in Viettel’s core network layer helps to improve its bottom line, and at the same time, amps up its support for 400G and 800G capacity networks to handle increasing demand from AI, video, and 5G services,” said Phung Duc Manh, Senior Network Engineer, Viettel Networks.

“Cisco’s provision of real-time access to operational statistics through its NSO platform has enabled Viettel to drastically improve the delivery of services across its product lifecycles,” said Le Tuan Vu, Senior Network Automation Engineer, Viettel Networks.

Pioneering Sustainable Network Solutions for a Digital Vietnam

With sustainability becoming a top priority for Viettel and the Vietnamese government’s agenda, the innovations running on Cisco Silicon One have helped Viettel optimize its energy consumption and minimize its carbon footprint, in line with the country’s sustainability goals. By deploying Silicon One, Viettel will reduce its hardware bulk by approximately 79%, from approximately 1,450 kg to a more streamlined 300 kg. This not only lightens the load but also translates into a 70% reduction in power consumption.

“Over the past decade, Viettel and Cisco have built a strategic partnership with a common vision to build the Internet of the future. As companies in Vietnam accelerate their digitization journeys and explore opportunities with emerging technologies such as 5G and AI, they need a new future-state network that will enable them to fully leverage the potential of digitalization. We are delighted to be working with a trusted partner like Cisco to build a next-generation network that provides the best connectivity experience to our customers with lower TCO and power consumption,” said Vu Chi Trung, Senior Network Engineer, Viettel Networks.

“The internet is today an integral part of how we work and live. At Cisco, we see an opportunity to transform the economics and sustainability of the internet for the future with our networking innovations. We hope to work with telcos of the world like Viettel to help connect the unconnected or underserved populations in Vietnam to truly power an inclusive future for all and foster greater innovation within the business ecosystem and propel Vietnam onto the global stage,” said Anand Bhaskar, Managing Director, Service Providers, India and ASEAN at Cisco.
