This year’s Kubecon + CloudNativeCon Europe conference is just around the corner and Cisco will be there.

Many may know Cisco as a networking company. And, more recently as provider of the popular UCS and HyperFlex compute platforms. But over the past several years software, services, and security have become a key part of our strategy. With an annual spend of over $6B on research and design in 2017, software is a significant part of that effort. Open source software projects serve as a foundation for many of our development teams.

Open Source at Cisco

We sponsor more than a dozen open source organizations and serve on the boards of the Linux Foundation, Cloud Native Compute Foundation, Cloud Foundry, and OpenStack to name just a few. But code contributions are what drive open source projects forward.

Across Cisco, each year we are increasing our code contributions across many new and existing open source projects, and are having impact through contributions such as:

  • Istio – a service mesh platform to connect, manage, and secure microservices
  • Contiv – a fabric that allows containers to be addressable from VM and bare-metal networks
  • IPv6 for Kubernetes – brings IPv6 networking support to Kubernetes
  • FD.io – a high-performance IO services framework for flexible storage and networks
  • Kubeflow – a machine learning toolkit for Kubernetes

These efforts are targeted to make it easier for our customers to bring a cloud-native computing model into production environments, both on premises and in public cloud. They are an important part of our recently announced Open Hybrid Cloud partnership with Google and help automate on premises resources in a Kubernetes cluster deployed from the new Cisco Container Platform.

I’m particularly excited by the potential for Istio to make it far easier to build and run applications that span private data centers and public cloud providers bringing a new level of observability, security, traffic management and performance to microservice-based applications.

Visit Cisco at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe – May 2-4

At Kubecon, we will hold several sessions covering these topics, so looking forward to seeing everyone in Copenhagen. Feel free to stop by the booth #D-E03 to talk to many of the Cisco developers contributing to CNCF projects.
