Verizon has achieved a significant technical milestone by implementing an innovative approach developed with Cisco toward increasing network efficiency on its next-generation transport network. This unique solution enables the continued growth of Ethernet services while improving the reliability of mission-critical private line services. The primary benefit of this innovation is that older TDM equipment that has approached end-of-support status and is still consuming prime real estate and power can be retired, thus delivering significant OPEX savings.

Migrating TDM services off these aging devices (and not just replacing them with another TDM platform) and onto a converged packet-optical platform saves significantly on central office footprint and power. Footprint savings on the order of 90 percent and power savings of up to 70 percent have been demonstrated. This space and power savings translates directly to OPEX benefits.

Further, having migrated TDM services to a converged packet-optical platform, it is a much simpler migration when the end customer ultimately shifts from TDM to an Ethernet service.

This high capacity circuit emulation network was a true architectural collaboration between Verizon and Cisco. We are proud to announce with Verizon that a major part of the One Network is running production traffic on this highly scalable packet-optical converged solution.

Cisco’s cost-effective and scalable solutions can help service providers build the packet network of the future while still delivering private line TDM services at a fraction of the cost.
