Earlier this morning, I gave a presentation at the 2015 OpenFabrics Software Developers’ Workshop. I discussed Cisco’s experiences with writing providers for both the Linux Verbs API and the Libfabric API.

The main takeaway from my presentation is that the libfabric APIs make more sense on our hardware than the Linux Verbs APIs. The slides elucidate several specific cases where — mainly because Libfabric was specifically designed to be much more hardware-neutral — Cisco VIC and Ethernet-based abstractions can be exposed naturally through the libfabric APIs.
