Partner Success Story
The city of Caldas da Rainha in Portugal was founded in 1484. Its name translates to Queen’s Spa, named for Queen Leonor who recognized the healing powers of the area’s sulphurous waters and built a hospital and church so others could benefit from its therapeutic hot springs.
What started with just two buildings is now home to over 50,000 citizens. And today, this city with a rich past is becoming future-proof, thanks to the Internet of Things.
The entirety of Caldas da Rainha is covered by a system of Cisco IoT gateways. This open network can be easily accessed by device developers and application vendors, which allows the city to constantly evolve and add new applications.
Actility, a global leader in deploying IoT solutions, is working with partners to integrate these applications onto the network. Current applications include modernizing the city’s water management, its waste collection, and even its parking.
The results are impressive. In the first weeks of testing, the network detected a leak of over 50,000 gallons of water, and was able to control and repair the problem.
Since installation, water management costs have been reduced by 33%. Waste management costs have been reduced by 67%, and the time it takes to find a parking spot has been cut in half.
The city plans to continue to modernize by adding smart streetlights, pollution sensors, and smart buildings with artificial intelligence.
Between a historic past and a modernized future, there’s a bridge.
